Book Review: Runaways

Okay, in the name of honesty, I totally got this book, I didn't realize it was the last in a series, which I have not read. It wasn't until I was 50 or more pages into it that I realized this, and I had already promised to review it so...I just kept going.
What's it about?
Four girls, four sisters at heart, all stuck in one miserable foster home. The one redeeming quality, is they are together. But when things go from bad to worse, the four girls decide to take matters into their own hands by stealing a car and driving across the country. With only the little bit of money they've managed to save up, a stolen car, stolen gas car, a map and a head full of dreams, the four take off for an adventure like they've never had before. From sleeping in their cars, to to falling in love, this journey is full of life changing events and the fear of getting caught. But all good things must come to an end. Will they survive this adventure? Will they survive what is to come at the end? The only way to know, is to jump in and go for it!
What did I think about it?
First of all, let me just say that, despite the fact that this is the last of a series, I didn't feel hindered by not reading the other books. In fact, it pretty much read as if it could be it's own stand alone book. However, I do think I would have been more invested had I read the others.
With that being said, this didn't feel like a typical V.C Andrews book to me. And that's not the worst thing! While there were some dark parts and some not good people, there were some great events, incredibly strong girls and some great people. The girls each had their own personalities and they all felt valued and significant in their own ways.
I felt like this book was more balanced then many V.C Andrews books I've read, too. It's not a blanket of darkness and misery. It's a mixture of such in a way that's sometimes surprising. I kept waiting for the incredibly dark events that I have come to expect from V.C Andrews books and was happily surprised that they didn't always come.
With that being said, I did find this book to a slow moving read with very little climax or huge events; the majority of the book fueled by anticipation of the worse and the end more then actual events. While that's not a style I want to read all of the time, it wasn't bad for a change.
What do I rate it?
In the end, while it didn't hook me, I did enjoy it. So, I rate this book....
